Ideal Drinking Water

The life of the world is water, H2O, aqua, and my new favorite, “Adam’s Ale.”

We have an abundant selection of “water” these days. So many bottled waters all touting to be the best for us. Water from all over the world. And my favorite, “improving” on God-made water by manipulating the pH, adding synthetic vitamins, minerals, and so on.

Alkaline water, with a pH above 8.5, is the general rule and has adverse effects on the body. Regular consumption can lead to skin irritation and cause high potassium levels, which for some folks with kidney dysfunction can worsen the kidneys.

Also, high pH water can also cause irritation to the stomach and digestive system. The stomach is an acid factory, with a pH of 2. Putting higher pH water directly into the stomach disrupts the acidity needed for proper digestion of proteins, resulting in symptoms of heartburn, indigestion, and GERD. Bloating, burping, nausea, and yes, even ulcers, are symptoms we are trying to resolve in our patients, and yet they are driving the issue by drinking alkaline water.

Purified and distilled waters are not very good either. These waters have low to no minerals left in them. Although the “contaminants” are removed, so are the good minerals.  Spring and well water are ready-now mineral supplements—especially calcium bicarbonate (found in hard water). Calcium bicarbonate is the form of calcium your body can assimilate very easily, resulting in better immune response against viruses and bacteria. And strong bones and teeth, especially in children.

In Dr. Royal Lee’s 1958 article Ideal Drinking Water from Let’s Live Magazine, Dr. Lee states that the ideal drinking water is spring water or well water. In the Unites States well water is still considered safe, but 1 in 5 wells may be contaminated with nitrites, heavy metals, or microorganisms . Getting your water tested is a smart idea.

Dr. Lee also commented about fluoride in water, how it actually weakens teeth, contributes to kidney issues (in rat experiments) and causes older folks to lose their teeth.

Dr. Lee states water accounts for 70% of the adult body weight and is one of the most important factors in maintaining equilibrium of the various body systems.

For your health and the health of your patients, become a water snob. Ask your patients routinely what kind of water they drink and educate them on the best forms of water.

I personally favor Evian water from France because the soil filters the water. It has a pH of 7.2 and 80 mg/L of Calcium bio available, 26 mg/l of Magnesium and 1 mg/l of potassium.

I have Eldorado Springs delivered to my office and home from Eldorado, CO, just south of Boulder. Eldorado has a pH 7.33 also with calcium magnesium and other trace minerals.

Mountain Valley Springs pH 7.3-8.1 and of course has trace minerals calcium and magnesium.

Those are my top 3 which I can usually find while traveling.
