Super Summer Refresher! And good for your gut!

Looking for the perfect summer refresher? Tired of “same old, same old”? Look no further! Here is a refreshing beverage sure to quench your thirst.

When you are sweating in the summer heat, your body needs to replenish fluids and electrolytes, and needs a higher concentration of electrolytes than the amount found in spring water or tap water (treated or untreated).

Forget those toxic electrolyte drinks (you know, the ones with blue and red dye and full of sugar or worse)! Who needs those packets of powder chock-full of “alternative” sweeteners that are suspect? How about something that tastes good, cools you off, replaces electrolytes, and is also good for your gut? I say, bonus!

All it takes are a few ingredients you likely have in your kitchen right now: whey (for lactic acid, which feeds intestinal flora), sparkling mineral or spring water, a squeeze of lemon, and a pinch of sea salt. Make it special by drinking it in a fancy glass. Make a pitcher for a picnic. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

Super Summer Refresher!

Makes 1 serving

Ingredients

  1. 2-4 tablespoons (1-2 oz.) whey (dripped from yogurt—homemade and raw is best. If store bought, then at least organic, whole milk, plain, from grass-fed cows.) *
  2. Juice from an organic lemon
  3. Pinch or two of high mineral salt (I like Baja Gold or Celtic.)
  4. 6-8 oz. (or more) sparkling mineral water (I prefer Gerolsteiner or San Pellegrino, in glass bottles, please.)

Instructions

  • Pour the whey in a glass. Fill with sparkling mineral water. Add a squeeze of lemon and a pinch of salt.
  • Taste.
  • Adjust flavors – do you want more lemon? More salt? More bubbles? Add what tastes good to you. (This could change by the day or by the hour, depending on the heat.)

Santé! To your good health!

*Note: if you do not consume probiotic foods or beverages on a regular basis, you will want to start your beverage with just a splash of whey. You can gradually increase the amount of whey over time.
