Doctor Weston A. Price, a dentist in Cleveland, spent about two-thirds of his life studying the pathology of dental disease, trying to find a cause for it. He wrote a two-volume tome, which was a textbook in dental colleges for many years on dental pathology. It’s a very scientific dissertation. In fact, if you start studying it, you will be dismayed at the extent and the scope of the subject that you have to master. You would never live long enough to even be conversant with one-tenth of the material in those two books. But when you get all through, what have you done? You haven’t learned anything of any practical value.
Doctor Price discovered, after he had gone through all this—and it cost him $250,000 to get these books out, with all of their marvelous illustrations of histological phenomena occurring in these diseased tissues—that the cause of all this was not to be found by looking in those tissues. The cause was to be looked for in the tables of the people he was treating: the food. When he discovered that, he simply folded up his whole institution and took a trip around the world to gather data to tell the people about it. Then he wrote the book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, which is a tremendous work. Doctor Price left an endowment fund with the Academy of Nutrition to ensure that the book was kept in circulation, kept available, and kept in print.
It’s the number one book for any library of anyone interested in this subject. It should be in every doctor’s library in this country, whatever their school of thought, whatever their basic philosophy. It should be a part of their study of malnutrition.
